The original manuscripts of the
Old Testament (in Hebrew) and the New Testament (in Greek) have long
been lost, however thanks to accurate copying by
generations of scribes of the Old Testament and thousands
of preserved old manuscripts and codices of the New Testament we
can be assured that the original tact has been accurately preserved.
Many translations have been made
over the years. In the early days of Christianity the Hebrew Old
Testament was usually read in a Greek translation (know as the
Septuagint). As the church spread, the need for translations grew,
taking the sacred text into widely accepted languages as well as local
tongues. The Bible was soon translated into Latin
(the language of the
Roman Empire
), Syriac (an Eastern Aramaic language), Coptic (Egyptian) and Arabic.
Unfortunately, translations were not always accurate and errors were
made. For this reason – and also because they did not want
“ordinary” people to be able to read the Bible – the (Roman)
Catholic Church banned any further translations and used only a
particular Latin text known as the Vulgate which had been
translated from the Greek around 400 AD. In the 1380s the first
English translations were made by John Wycliffe. By 1455 the printing
press was invented (Gutenberg), and mass production capabilities made
additional English versions and other language translations more
readily available.

The 'Delftse Bijbel' is generally considered to be
the first printed Dutch-language Bible in 1477.
The 'Statenvertaling' of 1637 (by many considered
the 'Dutch version of the King James) is still an often used
translation in the more conservative Christian circles. The name 'Statenvertaling'
is used because this translation was ordered by the Dutch Congress
(called 'the Staten Generaal'). The text was directly translated into
Dutch from the original languages Hebrew and Greek.
As next generations of Dutch translations date to
the 20th century (like the 'Nederlands Bijelgenootschap' translation
of 1951 and 'de Goed Nieuws Bijbel' of 1983) all found Bible texts in
19th century and earlier Dutch Bibles is likely to be the 'Statenvertaling'

What
determines the price of an antique Bible or book?
Generally, the factors that
most effect a Bible’s price are:
- Age… a 1573 printing costs more than a 1673
printing.
- Size… a 12 to 17 inch tall “pulpit
folio” costs more than a smaller Bible.
- Extra Features… Uniqueness (first
edition), Psalter-Hymnals,
Almanac-Calendars, Apocrypha, Maps, Concordances,
Illustrations, decorative red ruling, etc.
- Another
thing that detracts from the monetary value of a family
Bible is the handwritten genealogical information that
they usually contain. Unless you're from a very famous
family, or there is an individual in your family who is
famous, this handwritten information reduces a Bible's
value to a collector.
To a lesser extent, the
elaborateness of the binding will effect the price, though
the age of the binding usually has only a minimal effect, if
any, on the price. Most readers/collectors will actually
prefer a strong, fresh, new leather binding, to the worn and
somewhat less attractive ancient bindings… though some do
prefer the quaint, simple, somewhat distressed look of the
older bindings.

and fact, not legend and myth. Prepared
