Psalm 22 as Messianic Prophecy

Both Mark 15:34 and Matthew 26:46 record that Jesus cried out on the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.” It is remarkable to learn that these words were actually quoting the first verse of Psalm 22, written 1,000 years earlier by David. The Bible does not record the circumstances under which David wrote this psalm, but clearly he felt abandoned and desperate at the time. However, despite his despair David firmly clung to the truth that God was still his God and he lost neither his hope nor his faith.

Some depictions in Psalm 22 go far beyond any sufferings David himself experienced. There is no known incident in the life of David that exactly corresponds to the words of this psalm. What might have been true of David as a type of one who suffered was literally fulfilled by the sufferings of Christ. Knowing what we know now about Jesus’ crucifixion, the text of Psalm 22 described details of a crucifixion in remarkably accurate detail. This is even more fascinating when one considers that in the days of David stoning was the accepted method of execution and death by crucifixion was not even invented until 600 years later – 400 years before Jesus!
