The traditional (Antique) Family Bibles
of the second half of the 19th century are illustrated by many (hundreds to
even thousands) of eye-catching and attractive engravings (on wood or steel). French
artist Gustave Doré (1832-1883) was by far the best known
and most successful Bible illustrator of that period and his work is
found in many of the (antique) family Bibles of those days. Doré was born in Strasbourg and his first illustrated story was published at the age of
fifteen as a literary illustrator in Paris. Doré commissions include works by Rabelais, Balzac, Milton and Dante. In
the mid 180ies Doré was asked to illustrate a new illustrated English Bible.
His English Bible (1866) was a great success. In 1867 Doré had a major exhibition of his work in
London which led to the foundation of the Doré Gallery in New Bond Street.

During his lifetime he produced hundreds of
quality Bible illustrations from a wide variety of
biblical stories from both the Old Testament (including the Apocrypha)
and the New Testament, which were used in Bibles of many languages in
19th Century Europe and later in the Americas. Most of the
illustrations are identical in the various editions, but some
illustrations are not found in certain language editions, and in other
cases as slightly different illustration is found for the same
biblical passage.

Many skilful artists produced such artwork for illustrating Biblical
themes but without a doubt, Doré was the most renowned of them.
His
realistic style breathed new life into these real stories.
Centuries of mosaics, frescos, and stone reliefs, with their
precise iconography, along with wood block impressions
(recall the ever present halos on particular subjects) had
caricaturized many Bible stories in the minds of believers.
But his persons and places look real.
Gustave Doré's
work (and artistic license) was criticized by some in his
own day, but these illustrations stand the test of time as
good physical representations of important Biblical events.

1869 Harding (Doré) Illustrated Family Bible, rare color tiles
12" x 10" x 3" thick
VERY GOOD (VG) condition
A
nicely illustrated antique edition of a 1869 antique family Bible by
William W. Harding with two (rare) beautiful color tiles. Full page Gustave Doré engravings. Gold embossed
covers 9with a depiction of the last supper), edges of the pages are
decorated. Besides the King James - Authorized Version of the Old and New
Testaments, this Bible also has the Apocrypha, an extensive
Concordance and the Psalms. The family
register pages reflect the history of the Seifle family going back to
1846. There are NO ripped or missing
pages, only age related yellowing of the paper (as
to be expected) and some occasional foxing. No writing (except for the
family pages) The binding has been professionally
restored, so the hinges are in an excellent condition and not split.
No loose pages. The spine has been replaced and
there is
some wear to the edges of the covers and areas on the leather.

1870 Illustrated Devotional and Practical Polyglot Family Bible
12" x 10.5" x 4" thick
VERY GOOD (VG) condition.
This
is a
well preserved and likely hardly used Antique Family Bible in a VERY
GOOD condition. The leather covers of this 1870 vintage Bible are embossed in
gold with texts
from the Bible. It has over
200
illustrations of which many full page (and illustrated by Gustave
Doré). Besides a complete presentation Authorized/King
James Version and Old Testament Apocrypha, this Bible
contains many additional sections. There is also a
- unused/blank -section for recording the personal family events. This
Bible can be used and opened fairly easily as its bindings and spine have been
professionally restored. There is NO writing on any of the pages.
Still retains traces of the gold embossing on the edges of the covers
and the edges of the pages are gold gilt. There are NO ripped or missing
pages not any staining, just a slight 'aging' of the paper. There is
some wear to the edges of the covers and areas on the leather. The claps are in fine working

VERY GOOD (VG) condition.
One
of the first extensively illustrated Antique Family Bibles printed by
Holman with a metal claps in well working order. An
attractively illustrated by full page Gustave Doré engravings and complete Antique Family Bible in a
VERY GOOD (professionally restored) condition. The leather covers are embossed
and
the paper is gold gilted. The text is the Authorized Version
or King James Version and also contains the Apocrypha. (text from the title page): "Holman's
Edition, the Holy Bible containing the Old and New Testaments,
translated out of The Original Tongues, and with the former
translations diligently compared and revised with the Apocrypha,
Concordance and Psalms." There is also a (blank, no writing) section for recording the personal family
events. This
Bible can be used and opened easily as its bindings and the
spine/covers have been
professionally restored. There is NO writing on any of the
pages. There are NO ripped or missing
pages, just a slight occasional 'aging' of the paper and a few 'age

1872 Holman's Edition of the Holy Illustrated Family Bible

VERY GOOD (VG) condition.
Comprehensive and nicely 1872 Bible
with a gold
decorated leather cover, a completely functioning brass clasp on
the site and a number of gorgeous full page black and white engravings
(including a number from Gustave Doré). Besides a presentation
of the Authorized/King James Version of the Old and New Testament and
the Apocrypha, this Bible also contains lots of extra study
information. And there is a
unmarked/clean family record section. Binding and hinges work fine, all pages are solidly holding in their bindings and the paper is very clean. The
cover and spine show some wear but not much for its age. Paper is
clean, hardly any age spots. All in all a very complete and very early Antique Family Bible!

Intricately
illustrated 1873 Family Bible, gold embossed covers with various Bible
scenes, gold gilt pages, numerous full page color and black and white
(including Gustave Doré) lithographs and maps. Very complete
Bible, besides the King James Version of the Old and New Testaments
plus the Apocrypha, this Bible also contains sections on the History
of the Books of the Bible, William Smith's Pronouncing Dictionary,
Dobbin's False Gods, Concordance, Metrical Psalms and much, much more.
Also a large fold-out picture map of Jerusalem and its surrounding
areas. There are NO ripped
pages, only some age related yellowing of the paper (as
to be expected). Most of the original family pages have been removed. The
binding has been professionally
restored, so the hinges are in an excellent condition and not split.

EXCELLENT (E), almost "as-new" condition. This beautiful - almost as NEW - Roman Catholic antique family Bible
has an exquisite decorative cover which consists of thick leather covered boards embossed and
with intricate
artwork and a (gold gilt) cross surrounded by various gold-embossed
decorations and two fully operational metal clasps, each in
the shape of a cross The text of this Bible is the so called Douay-Rheims Bible (or Doway
Rheims Bible or D-R Bible), with "annotations by the Rev. Dr. Challoner". To
support the study of this Bible various notes and explanations are
added to the text in chapter descriptions and footnotes and a very
extensive History of the Holy Catholic Bible and Calmet's
illustrated and explanatory Catholic Dictionary of the Bible. Numerous
"elegant steel plates and other appropriate engravings"
(including from the French
artist Gustave Doré) and color maps. Contains Approbations
of 51 American bishops and archbishops. At the middle of the Bible is

Size: 11" x 12.5" x 4".
GOOD (G) condition. An
extensively illustrated and comprehensive, antique Holman's edition of
1875 family Holy
Bible. Over 1300 illustrations, including many full page Gustave Doré
engravings and maps and charts (even a large fold-out one). As per the title page: "The
HOLY BIBLE Translated Out of THE ORIGINAL TONGUES with the APOCRYPHA, CONCORDANCE and PSALMS.
Comprehensive Bible Dictionary...complete history of each book of the
Bible, beautifully illustrated, cities of the Bible...Jewish and
Egyptian antiquities; Biblical scenery; manners and customs of the ancients
natural history; Bible aids for social prayer; a history of the Jewish
worship, etc, over one hundred thousand marginal references. A concise
history of all religious denominations...the whole embellished with
thirteen hundred engravings on steel, wood and in colors." The family
register pages have not been filled out!. There are NO ripped or missing
pages, just a slight occasional light stains/browning of the paper as
to be expected. No writing. This is the original binding (so handle
with care!) but the hinges are in a fairly good condition and not split.
We noticed a few loose pages. There is

VERY GOOD (VG) condition. This large illustrated Roman Catholic antique family Bible
has a beautiful decorative cover which consists of thick leather covered boards embossed and
a (gold gilt) cross.
The text of this Bible is the so called Douay-Rheims Bible (or Doway
Rheims Bible or D-R Bible), which is an English translation from the
Latin Vulgate. The text covers the complete Old and New Testament as
well as the books that are often referred to as the Apocrypha. To
support the study of this Bible various notes and explanations are
added to the text in chapter descriptions and footnotes and a very
extensive History of the Holy Catholic Bible. Numerous full
page engravings (including from the French
artist Gustave Doré) and color maps. At the end of
the Bible is an (historical) index and some pages for family history
(filled out for the Payne family of Colorado going back to 1844) and
pictures.
The Bible's binding, spine and cover have been
very professionally restored and are absolutely solid. All pages are present and we
only noticed a few very minor damages (rough edges, some small tears).
Some age related coloring. The cover shows some age related

the pages are gold-gilted. This Bible has numerous
illustrations of which many full page (including Gustave Doré) and
some in color. Besides a verse-by-verse parallel presentation
of both the Authorized Version and the Revised Version, this Bible
contains in additional sections (text from the title page): "a
complete concordance and the Psalms of David in metre, copious
marginal references, chronological tables, and many important and
valuable aids to the study of the Holy Scriptures, written to increase

VERY GOOD (VG) condition
An extensively illustrated ("nearly
two thousand illustrative engravings on steel, wood, and in colors") and well preserved
1882 antique family study Bible with lots of extras,
including a beautiful never used family records section. Bound in
gold decorated leather covers and spine with gold gilt pages.
Complete King James text of the Old Testament plus the complete New
Testament in both the King James version as well as the Revised

This huge and bulking, extensively illustrated
(full page black and white engravings as well as a number of
chromolithographs) Roman Catholic antique family Bible
has a decorative cover which consists of 3/8" thick leather covered boards embossed and gilded with intricate artwork, and depicts
a cross and a number of scenes from the Bible (including the Last
Supper).
The text of this Bible is the so called Douay-Rheims Bible (or Doway
Rheims Bible or D-R Bible), which is an English translation from the
Latin Vulgate. The text covers the complete Old and New Testament as
well as the books that are often referred to as the Apocrypha (which
are part of the canon of the Roman Catholic Old Testament). To
support the study of this Bible various notes and explanations are
added to the text in chapter descriptions and footnotes. Numerous full
pages engravings (including Gustave Doré). The Bible's binding, spine are in good
working order, but age is starting to make it more

are presented in parallel for the New Testament. Many extra's are

1890 Extensively Illustrated Comprehensive Parallel Family Bible

GOOD (G) condition
A
beautifully illustrated and fully 'loaded' Antique Family Bible.
This 1890 luxury Bible contains the Old and New testament in both the
Authorized (King James) Version as well as the Revised Version and is profusely illustrated with
over "2000 plates, full page color plates and maps" (including
illustrations of the renowned Gustave Doré). There are numerous study
aids in the comprehensive Bible. The
Bible itself is in a VERY GOOD condition. It has been professionally
rebound in the past and is a solid book. Unfortunately there are heavy
embellishments to the
front cover and spine. Because of this we have downgraded the
condition of this Bible to GOOD. This problem could be easily fixed by
swapping the front and back cover (which is undamaged). Pages are
clean, somewhat tanned through age. Two nice metal clasps to close the
Bible. Head pins are tight on the clasps , no
give or slip. The family pages have been filled out by the Hewitt
family of Blossburg, going back to 1874.

The last 100 pages has a couple of pages, not every one, where pen underlining for one word or sentence have been highlighted. It is neatly done, however, a mild blemish that must be disclosed. Otherwise, the illustrations, text and overall appearance is very nice.

The King James Bible
As
the sun began to set on the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), within
Parliament a draft is drawn up under an Act of Parliament for the sole
purpose of a new version of the Bible: "An
act for the reducing of diversities of bibles now extant in the English
tongue to one settled vulgar translated from the original."
The resulting (Authorized) King James Version is an English
translation of the Bible from the original languages (Hebrew and Greek)
begun in 1604 and first published in 1611 by the Church of England. No book has had greater
influence on the English language or on the English character. For the
next three hundred years the majority of English men and women heard it
read aloud Sunday after Sunday and, until within living memory, a very
large proportion of people read the Bible with steady, life-long
devotion in their own homes. And this great quality was carried to
America, where its influence has hardly been less. All antique family
Bibles published before 1881 are exclusive in the Authorized or King
James translation.
The Revised Version The Revised Version (or English Revised Version) of the Bible is a late 19th-century British revision of the King James Version of 1611. The New Testament was published in 1881, the Old Testament in 1885, and the Apocrypha in 1894. The stated aim of the RV's translators was "to adapt
the King James' version to the present state of the English language without changing the idiom and vocabulary," and "to adapt it to the present standard of Biblical scholarship." Further, it was to be "the best version possible in the nineteenth century, as King James' version was the best which could be made in the seventeenth century." To those ends, the Greek text used to translate the New Testament was believed by some to be of higher reliability than the Textus Receptus used for the
KJV. At the time of the RV's publication, the nearly 300-year old King James Version was still the only viable English Bible in Victorian England. The RV, therefore, is regarded as the forerunner of the entire modern translation tradition. Other important enhancements introduced in the RV include arrangement of the text into paragraphs, printing Old Testament poetry in indented poetic lines (rather than as prose), and the inclusion of marginal notes to alert the reader to variations in wording in ancient manuscripts. What
determines the price of an antique Bible?
Generally, the factors that
most effect a Bible’s price are:
- Age… a 1573 printing costs more than a 1673
printing.
- Size… a 12 to 17 inch tall “pulpit
folio” costs more than a smaller Bible.
- Extra Features… Uniqueness (first
edition), Psalter-Hymnals,
Almanac-Calendars, Apocrypha, Maps, Concordances,
Illustrations, decorative red ruling, etc.
- Another
thing that detracts from the monetary value of a family
Bible is the handwritten genealogical information that
they usually contain. Unless you're from a very famous
family, or there is an individual in your family who is
famous, this handwritten information reduces a Bible's
value to a collector.
To a lesser extent, the
elaborateness of the binding will effect the price, though
the age of the binding usually has only a minimal effect, if
any, on the price. Most readers/collectors will actually
prefer a strong, fresh, new leather binding, to the worn and
somewhat less attractive ancient bindings… though some do
prefer the quaint, simple, somewhat distressed look of the
older bindings.
