The Virgin Birth - did it really happen?

In two of the four New Testament gospels we read that Jesus of born of a virgin (Mary) who was conceived by the Holy Spirit. Matthew does not give us many details how this happened and just mentions the basic facts: "This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 1:18).

In Luke’s gospel many more details about the background of Mary, her encounter with an angel and her relationship with Joseph are revealed. Luke explicitly mentions that Mary was a virgin (Luke 1:34: "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"), that she was engaged to be married (Luke 1:27: "a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David.") and that the child was not conceived by a man but by God through the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35: "The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.")

That Jesus was to be born from a virgin through the Holy Spirit is with our 20/20 perfect hindsight completely understandable and considered a great miracle. Jesus can only be (the Son of) God if He was not just human. By having a divine Father and a human mother we can intuitively understand that He is both God and man at the same time.

And we now know that through the virgin birth the Old Testament prophecy of Isaiah 7:14: "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." was to the letter fulfilled. Not only because Mary was His virgin mother. Jesus’ divinity also explains the name "Immanuel," which means "God with us." Since Jesus is God, that part of Isaiah’s prophecy was literally fulfilled.

But how do we know that the virgin birth account was not just added to the gospels to embellish Jesus’ birth as fulfilled prophecy and a supernatural event? It is obviously not possible for us 2000 years after this event to study any medical or other scientific evidence to support this claim. However through logical analysis combined with our knowledge of life and the culture of those days the case for the virgin birth seems surprisingly strong.

Have you ever wondered why the miracle of the virgin birth of Jesus only received limited attention in the New Testament? Yes, both Matthew and Luke briefly mention it at the beginning of their gospels, but it is not brought up again by them or any of the other New Testament books as an evidence for the Divinity of Jesus anywhere. Actually the Bible is remarkably quiet about this. Why was this great and important miracle not mentioned again and again?

For us to understand this, we need to go back to the culture at the time of Jesus. In those days a girl’s greatest asset was considered to be her sexual purity. Only a young woman who retained her virginity could expect to secure a good man for a husband. Mothers kept their daughters out of the public eye as much as possible to not expose them to temptation. A pregnant unmarried woman was considered a grave insult to the honor of her family. As still seen today in many Arab countries (whose citizens still live under the Islamic laws and culture as it was in the ancient Middle East) such pregnancies would often lead to honor killings. The father and/or her brothers, lamenting her inability to marry, could kill her to avoid the disgrace.

Against this background Jesus’ virgin birth was not heralded as a miracle. Especially for Matthew, writing about Jesus’ birth must have presented a real dilemma. As a devout Jew, Matthew’s decision to record that Joseph, representing the royal bloodline of Jesus, was not Jesus’ natural father, could open up a potential flood of compromising criticisms that Jesus was born out of wedlock. This account in Matthew’s gospel shows his unconditional commitment to writing the truth without altering any of it.

Therefore the most logical conclusion is that the mere mentioning of the conception and birth of Jesus from a young woman who was not married and still a virgin IS the compelling evidence that it really happened. If the gospels were not factual, mere legends and embellished stories, the account of the virgin birth would not have been included.

Apologetics: 2009 the Darwin Year

For more articles like this see our resource center

2009 is the 150th anniversary of the introduction of the Theory of Evolution through the publication of Origin of Species by Charles Darwin in 1859. Darwin’s theory became the basis for a belief system - a new 'religion' called evolution - allowing for an explanation for our existence independent from God.

In evolution, the entire universe is considered to have evolved by natural processes and random selection into its present state of high organization and complexity. In this model the universe began in a state of pure randomness. Gradually it has – by "survival of the fittest" – become more ordered and complex. In order for the complex structure of the universe to have been produced by present natural processes, a vast amount of time was required.

This all sounds logical and as over the last 150 years more and more bright minds have endorsed it, taught it and further developed it, a majority of people now seems to believe that evolution is true and that the alternative - that God created us and our world - is false and only still believed by the 'uneducated' and 'gullible'.

However the 'case' for evolution is far from watertight. It seems actually to be more like a boat full of holes which - despite desperate efforts by evolutionists to keep on pumping - is slowly but surely sinking! Modern day science reveals massive problems, like (just to name a few):

1) The beginning needed a Creator. If there ever was a Big Bang - who or what caused it to happen? How can something (a lot, actually everything) come from nothing? Wild theories like the completely unproven evolutionary string theory require a lot more 'faith' than accepting a Creator God.

2) Earth is a truly privileged planet. Chances of finding a similar habitable planet like Earth suited for life in our Milky Way galaxy or even in the entire universe are practically zero.

3) First Life. Modern science has reached the unanimous conclusion that life on a planet like earth could not have started by mere chance. The complex building blocks of the simplest living cell – proteins, DNA and molecular machines – do not allow for random assembly even through long periods of time. Despite decades of intense research, origin-of-life scientists have found no evolutionary explanation to explain how life could have started by natural processes alone.

4) No mechanism for species to evolve. Natural selection is just variation within a species. Genetic mutations are required to evolve from one species into the next, however mutations are not common and mostly neutral. If they happen, they are almost always harmful not beneficial. The occurrence of many small, beneficial steps of mutations is against all odds and has never been observed.

5) The fossil record. There are no intermediate species in the fossil record. According to Darwin's theory of evolution, species would evolve to more complex new species by a series of gradual mutations. However, despite of over 100+ years of extensive studies of the fossil record, no intermediate species have been discovered. On the contrary, the Cambrian Explosion shows the almost "overnight" appearance of the body plans of all modern day life forms at about the same moment in time.

So, WHY still believe all this? Why does the scientific world still want to convince us - after 150 years of unsuccessful looking for answers - that evolution is THE theory that explains our existence or is even a FACT?

I believe the answer is simple. Evolution has become a religion. Its adherents have based their personal convictions, values and above all comfortable lifestyle on this idea that we are just the product of time and chance. We are just an 'accident' and there is no God. Therefore we can do what we want and when we want it, because we are not accountable to anybody. We are our own gods and we should live life to achieve maximum pleasure.

Because evolution has become like a religion its adherents are also not really interested to be open-minded for criticism or alternative explanations. "What do you mean that you want to challenge the concepts of evolution? It is a fact, so we do not need to prove it anymore!"

On a personal note - I was taught the theory of evolution in high school. It was not even presented to me as a theory but as a fact. Only very limited evidence was presented. and because of it I lost my interest in God and Christianity. Now I know I was duped, I was deceived. Only when life presented me with an interest and an opportunity to do my own research at a later stage of my life I discovered that it was a lie. But I had to discover that myself. I had to dig myself into science to find the gaps and faulty patches. I just wish that during my school and college years one of my teachers would have been more objective and at least would have told me that the theory of evolution is not a fact and shown me the alternative view of Intelligent Design of Creation.  That way I could have made my own decision about what to believe earlier in my life.

Christmas

Inspiration and worship

It was a couple of weeks before Christmas and our daughter Anne and I had decided to start with decorating our house for Christmas. In order to get to the Christmas decorations we had to work our way through the dark storage area looking for the boxes, because they are (of course) always in the back. When we finally found them, we carried them down the staircase and brought them into the living room, where ‘the fun’ of unpacking started.
After a couple of hours Anne and I could not believe the mess we were in and I realized how tired I was of all the STUFF I had been collecting over the years just to "decorate" for Christmas. I looked at the mess again, I looked at Anne and by seeing the look on her face, I knew she was thinking the same thing. We decided that from that moment on we wanted ‘Jesus to be the reason for the season’. We grabbed several big boxes and filled them up with things we did not need anymore and gave it away. It made us feel so much better!

While driving the boxes over to the place where they would take them, I looked at them again, and I realized how the personal relationship I had with Jesus had turned my life upside down and that what I had done with our storage area and our boxes was what Jesus had done with my heart…
Jesus had cleaned out and cleaned up my heart, because I had placed boxes in the very back of my heart and I was afraid to bring them into the light. I had been afraid to open them up and to unpack them. For years and years, I refused to think about the boxes in the back of the storage area of my heart and I tried for a long time to ‘forget’ that I had them. However, when I met Jesus He kept on asking to search through the storage area to see if there was anything left, and if so,

He encouraged me to bring them into His light and to empty all of them out. I was ashamed of the ‘stuff’ that was stored in the boxes and the ‘mess’ it would make in my life again by emptying them out. I also knew that I had to clean up the mess that it would make. I was not sure if I wanted to go through the shame and the pain again...but Jesus kept asking me to trust Him and to surrender all.

The more I got to know Him, the more I loved and trusted Him and the time came that I HAD to surrender my boxes with garbage and I prayed that if I opened up my boxes He would forgive me for the ‘worldly stuff (sin)’ that was in them. And slowly but surely I started searching for the boxes and one by one I was able to hand them over. It has been the most difficult thing to do in my life…..but Jesus helped me to find all of them. He pointed them out one by one. He encouraged me to open them up. He even helped me to unpack them, so I could face the stuff that was stored in it, work through it, sort it out and clean it up. He even TOOK my stuff and carried it to His dump!

And do you know why? He KNEW that if I wanted to live my life for Him I had to surrender my WHOLE heart, including the storage areas in the back, because they took up space and light. There was still darkness and He needed more room so I could store more of Him and less of me. More room for Him to shine. Not just more room, but Jesus had asked me to give it all.

I want to ask you, are YOU willing this year to empty out your boxes with ‘stuff’ to give Jesus more space in your heart? Please, Let Jesus be the reason for the season and not for only this season, but for every season, every day and every waking moment.

May His light shine in and through us.

Amen.                            (for more of Coba's poems and devotionals)

5.0 out of 5 stars Bijna niet te geloven. Rob v.d. (posted on Bol.com about 'Gefundeerd geloof '- December 5, 2008)
